‘Feeling good and being positive’

I heard that from a customer in the market where I work, a co-worker, and two family members in the last couple of days. That’s what church ought be about, they said.

“Well…(I said)…it can be”. Mariakirken door by Farl

But the Bible does not speak in terms of positive or negative.

It speaks of going from death…to life.

I told them that they need to find a church where the Word of God is proclaimed in such a manner as to expose you and your ineptness, your unwillingness, to be what God would have you be. And then they need to procalim to you what God has done for you about that problem. And then they need to hand over to you, without charge, the meal that the world does not, and cannot offer, the meal that gives the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.

I told them that they can be lost. I told them that Jesus will never lose them, be that the troubles and cares of this world, and their own rebellion from God, and the devil, are actively working to seperate you from God.

I told them that they need to go to church and hear the Word and receive the Lord’s Supper and to force themselves to go if they did not feel like going. Because they are dying people and will soon enter the grave and they will then need someone to pull them out of that grave to new and everlasting life.

I hope, by the grace of God, that they find a church door.

  1. I was thinking the same thing the other day while listening to the contemporary Christian radio station. All those songs about that happy, peppy feeling Jesus gives you and how you feel like a brand new person, etc.

What if you don’t get that happy, peppy feeling? What if I still feel like the weight of sin? Am I any any less saved? Is there something wrong with me? Do I need a new church or a new prescription?

It’s all the rage at the moment, and not just in churches.Watching a review of the new movie ‘the lovely bones’ last night certainly showed how a slice of culture in general is buying in here, but even the British Humanist Association used an upbeat slogan for its promotion of atheism campaign: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life”. It all gets pretty dull when life equates to not much more than how we feel.

  3. Wow, I’ll try and memorize that.

I’ve taken to carrying CPH’s cheap catechisms ($3.00 for 12 or something) in my purse, so when someone needs to know what church is about, I can show them a thing or two and give it to them keep.

  4. I think I’ll spend this week being absolutely glum… just to see if I can shock myself out of this Mary Poppinsish mind set and into REALITY…*; )

  5. Hi Nancy, can you do that: make yourself glum all week? 🙂

The point is you believe the truth because it is the truth, and it sets you free and that does make you happy, because Jesus is the truth and he loves you, … but you don’t go looking for happiness to get happy. That’s that turning in on yourself, which does not make happy at all.

You know all that… Sorry for lecturing.

  6. Thanks Brigitte! Sometimes I just can’t help myself…*; ) But, then isn’t that the point? *: D

  7. Dear Nancy,

I hope you never lose that happy, peppy feeling.

If you lose that lovin’ feelin’ you might start to wonder if Jesus is really FOR you.

Let’s all sing it: “..And it’s the greatest, grandest feeling! And it’s a feeling here to stay. And it’s a joy that needs revealing, so I just want to say…Love of Jesus, love of Jesus, down in my heart to stay!”

    • Yeah! And just try to read all the way through Romans 8 without breaking into song or tappin’ your toes just a little! *: D

      It’s GOOD (Happy) NEWS!

      Jude 1:24-25 (King James Version)

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
