Reminds me of a sermon of a couple of angels standing by as some humans perform good works.
One angel, rather bored, turns to the other one ‘No faith in any of that; it’ll all go up in smoke’

If we’re doing something out of fear of punishment (if we don’t) or hope of reward…then we’d be better off never having done it. Except for the benefit to the neighbor.
