  1. Pastor Mark: My wife and I are attending an ELCA church, have been for over a year and I have said here before how much I am learning to appreciate the opportunity to worship God in the Lutheran tradition. Last Sunday’s message however was not what I just heard here. The emphasis throughout was on how we are going to be judged on one thing, our obedience. Are we doing what we are supposed to be doing? Are we obeying? and on and on. I’m glad I have your teaching here in order to be brought back to the finished work of Christ. Thank you.

  2. ron,

I hope the preacher that told you we were going to be judged on our obedience (only), are we obeying, etc. etc., was having an off day.

It’s very disconcerting to think that a Lutheran pastor would believe that and worse yet, teach it to his/her flock.

Now, you could make the argument that having faith (alone) is being obedient. Jesus told them when they asked “what is it to do the works of the Father?” “believe in the one whom the Father has sent.”

I guess that might fit in there alright, but then we can’t even do that very well, can we? (mustard seed and all that)

  3. God forbid that we should preach a Gospel that actually lets people relax.

  4. I guess the self-justification game is alive and well…even in some Lutheran churches.

Brother Martin would be rolling over in his grave…were he in it.
