Calvin and Zwingli discuss the Sacraments

.

Who is a Christian… and who is not?

Just because someone does not understand the Sacraments as Lutherans understand them, does that mean that they are not saved?

No, it doesn’t mean that at all. All it means is that the assurance that God’s so dearly wants us to have, is compromised. It also means their Christian freedom, that God wants them to enjoy, is compromised. It means (quite often) that they will be engaging in “religious activities” to prove to themselves and others that they really do have the faith that they claim to have.

We don’t know who the true believers are. “The wheat and tares grow together.” Only God knows the hearts of people and He will separate those whom He knows from those He doesn’t know, at the Day of judgement.

Anyone who professes Christ Jesus, I call brother, or sister. After that, we can have some good discussions about just what that means.

I just wanted to make this clear to anyone who thought I was being judgemental in the last post. As St. Paul said, “I judge no one. I don’t even judge myself.” Only Christ is qualified to fill that job description.

Thanks.

Last Sunday’s Hymn of the Day – Salvation Unto Us Has Come

.

By Paul Speratus, 1523

Salvation unto us has come By God’s free grace and favor;

Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never.

Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone;

He is our one redeemer.

Theirs was a false, misleading dream Who thought God’s law was given

That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven.

The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light

That lurks within our nature.

Faith clings to Jesus’ cross alone And rests in him unceasing;

And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing.

For faith alone can justify; Works serve our neighbor and supply

The proof that faith is living.

All blessing, honor, thanks and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit,

The God who saved us by his grace; All glory to his merit.

O triune God in heaven above, You have revealed your saving love;

Your blessed name we hallow.

The Book of James

I ran into five Jehovah’s Witnesses on my way into work this morning. I didn’t have much time but I asked them if they’d listen to me for a minute. They said sure, so I just handed Christ to them with NO strings and told them there was absolutely nothing that we could add to Christ’s work for us on the cross, etc. 5.16.09 The Watchtower - 264/365 by TheWorldThroughMyEyes

They immediately brought out James and threw acid over the whole thing.

Oh well.

Just a reminder…

.

 The gospel is 100% Jesus…and 0% of you.

No…not 99% and 1%.  No…not 98% and 2%.

100% Jesus…0% you.

It has nothing to do with how much, or how little you know about the church, about doctrine, or even how much you know or don’t know about Jesus.

It is not about what you say, feel, think… or what you do or don’t do.

It has nothing to do with your seriousness about God. (for you are not)

It is all about what Jesus has done for you…a real sinner… one of the ungodly.

.

‘Your sins are forgiven for Jesus’ sake’…period.

That’s the gospel.

Are Hymns in a Hymnal Sacred?

 Ah…no, they are not.

  If they can be improved upon , and made (more) Christ centered, that is a good thing.

Our pastor does just that, and quite often.

 This one (our Sending Hymn today) we sang to the tune of #369 in the Lutheran Book of Worship, text by Rev. Mark Anderson

O God, From Word and Table

 O God from Word and table, you send us on our way

Our words could never thank you for all you’ve done this day

In bread and wine and promise, our lives have been restored

Your gracious love has claimed us, through Christ our mighty Lord

You boke the bread of promise and poured the cup divine

And through these simple off”rings your mercy now is mine

O Lamb of God, Most Holy, your grace alone imparts

the faith that trusts you only, and satisfies our hearts.

What struggles lie before us, O Lord we cannot know

Our lives, as yours, O Jesus, into this world must go

Foresaking earth’s brief glories, you chose to bear the cross

So we, by faith, will follow and count the world as loss.
